If you are short of money and you intend to start an online business, you stand a very good chance of spending your money on things you don’t really need. I know because I was there four years ago. I started off on my internet career by diving right into it without getting good sound advice. This resulted in me spending thousands of dollars on systems and software which I never really used mainly because I did not know the basics of internet marketing.

• Learn the basics of working online.
• Learn the basics of using a computer.
• Learn about hosting and using cPanel, buying a domain, setting up a website using wordpress, using an FTP client to upload files to your hosting account.
• Learn the very basics of HTML (you won’t be sorry).
• Learn basic SEO (search engine optimisation).
• Learn how to generate traffic to your website.
• Learn how to manage your time.
• Focus, focus, focus, focus! Stick to one thing until you make it work for you!
• Keep this list and mark off each point as you complete them.

I know that I have mentioned things in the above list which you do not understand or know what they are or what they mean, but don’t worry, these things will all be laid out very clearly for you to learn quickly and at your own speed. If you are an average learner you will have gained enough knowledge in 5 or 6 weeks putting in an hour or so each day, to be able to become productive and comfortable online. But of course if you spend more time learning you can drastically reduce the learning curve. I have a full video reference library of the most common tasks so they are always available as a reference.

I know some of you reading this are already thinking  to yourselves, wow too much to learn here, I’m off to find an easier way to make money online, and believe me, there are thousands of people out there who are only  too delighted to sell you some one click wonder piece of software which will make you millions at the click of a mouse.  But before you click away to go find your silver bullet think about this, if such a thing existed why are they selling it to you or better still why do they need to sell it to you if it can make you or anyone with no skills millions with just a couple of clicks of a mouse, why have they not  made their millions with their one click wonder.

The truth is, the software rarely if ever works as described, in fact most silver bullet buyers never actually use the software they buy, because they do not know how to use it, they do not possess the basic skills required to be a successful online business owner in the first place.

The marketers selling the software make their money from selling to silver bullet chasers, don’t become a silver bullet chaser, it costs a lot and you usually lose your money.

So you have decided not to become a silver bullet chaser and you have decided to live in the real world and build yourself a successful sustainable online business by learning the basic skills of working on the internet. Now you are set on the right road to success and  that’s great, because you have now taken the first step to becoming a member of an exclusive club I call the 5% Club.

Let me explain, I called this club the 5% Club, for the following reason, out of the 100% of people who attempt to get into the online business, only 5% ever bother to learn their trade sufficiently enough to become successful. The other 95% fail miserably, lose their money and give up. Ironically enough though some of the 5% Club members are the ones who get to keep the money that the 95% new comers  have spent carelessly and wasted their money. If you don’t believe me now, put a note in your calendar for the same time next year, and depending on which percentage you opt into, look at where you are then, and then tell me if I was right or wrong !

I will not go on and on about the opportunities which the internet presents to its users, I am sure that you are well aware that the internet can reach the four corners of the world, and that you can use it to sell products and information to people all over the globe. You must now realise that, your online market is not just in your own country which may be experiencing  economic difficulties, your market is completely global therefor your opportunities are far greater and your chances of success are greater still, so take confidence from those facts, because once you master the necessary skills the world is literally your oyster!

So where and how do you start?

This is probably the most important question you should answer first or you should find to answer to.

There are many ways to make money online and earn an extra income from the internet, let me give you some examples, but before I do let me explain the meaning of some of the terms I’ll be using:

• Online business  – A business which primarily sells goods or services from its website.
• Offline business – A bricks and mortar business, literally every type of business you can find on the street. Typically a business that sells its goods and services to customers at their premises or at their customer’s homes.
• Affiliate marketing – Selling  things online and getting a commission for the sale. (Online Business)
• CPA (cost per action) – you get people to take an action online (submit an email – phone number –zip or postal code, and get paid for them having taken that action. (Online Business )
• Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace – promoting online  and or offline businesses for a fee using social media. (Both)
• Blogging – Writing and maintaining your own blog for a living or writing or maintaining someone elses blog for a fee. (Online Business )
• Providing SEO (Search engine optimization) – Promoting someone’s online or offline business on the internet for a fee. (Both)
• Website development and design – Designing and building websites for customers, easier than you think ! (Both)
• Graphic Design – Creating graphics , images, book covers, banners and promotional media to sell to online and offline customers. (Both)

• Article writing – Writing articles and content for websites or for E-Learning materials.(Both)
• Online Research – Carrying out research for online or offline clients. (Both)
• Video Production – Creating promotional videos for online and offline customers.(Both)
